What do you tend to hyperfocus on?

For me, it varies. Sometimes I'll just get distracted by something and find my self spending hours finding out about it - when I should be doing something else. I'm thinking specifically about the post from the General ADD talk forum (I don't remember the author, sorry) about you know you have ADD if you pull up Wikipedia to look up something for your history paper and a few hours later you know all there is to know about the mating habits of the preying mantis!

Of course, for me, the internet is a real problem, since the information is so readily available, it's easy to get side tracked. But I even do it with print books, the last time I found a new author I like, I ended up reading all 21 of his books before I lost my interest.

Sometimes it's really useful though. After spending weeks procrastinating and not studying, I pulled an all day, all night cram session just before my first biology test of the semester. We got the results back today. I got a 93. Not too bad at all.

So anyhow, what sorts of things do you tend to hyperfocus on?

Amy

I got through college hyperfocussing 24/7 on whatever topic was going on in my English classes (my major). My personal reference library went from 0 grammar books, for instance, to over 80 in two years.

Otherwise, whatever takes my fancy... I suppose.

Anything to do with the computer. Even to the point of missing most of a movie.

Re: What do you tend to hyperfocus on?

I hear you about the Wikipedia thing, I'll go on there to look up a quick fact and soon will spend hours on there looking up various things that are completely irrelevant to what I was orginially searching. Mostly its about pharmacutical drugs and their effects, while at other times it could be anything that pops into my mind.

Re: What do you tend to hyperfocus on?

If I am troubleshooting a Network problem or a Database coding problem, it's on!!! Or practically anytime I'm attached to a computer...

I will literally not realize I am hungry, press on thru lunches, not realize people are talking to me unless they tap me on the shoulder (those that know me realize what's happening and know that I need a tap to snap me out of it; those that do not, often think I'm being rude...meds have made an incredible improvement BTW)

If I haven't solved the issue and I manage to detach myself from the problem; it is fairly common for me to go to sleep and wake up in the middle of the night with the solution. And, yes, I have to go fix it that very moment...my boss is very understanding, if not amused, when I arrive at work around 5 a.m.

My wife, however, is still mystified.

solitaire and organizing my bookshelves and dvd's by color, or author, or genre, or chronologically (either by when i bought them or when they came out), or size, or title. This is usually when i should be doing something productive like studying math or cleaning my room or some other nonsense.

Re: What do you tend to hyperfocus on?

Wikipedia is a terrible thing for me, I will get so distracted learning about random things. I'll be looking up information about the political situation in Zimbabwe for my polisci class, and an hour and a half later, will have read articles about Jennifer Lopez, Groundhog's Day, Wal-Mart, avocados, whatever. That's why I try to keep my internet time down, because it's focusing to the point where I'm becoming less productive.

I could look at those "pictures of the week" from around the world that they have on news websites forever. for some reason I get a kick out of them.
