The World Falls Apart As We Watch TV

I am posting this because my wife said she thought this poem was one of my best poems, at least poetically. I haven't taken any classes on poetry and the proper form of writing them.

The World Falls Apart As We Watch TV

Crashing, they hurry
the bombs burst with fury,
pounding the ground while
no one makes a sound.
The war rages on
from sunset to dawn.

Missiles and maddness
the world's gone
crazy and jumped the train.
Injustice they cry
we have no right to police the
world. What do they
know, only what
they hear or what they are told.

People march right out of the fold
into the propaganda smear
that puts more fire under our fear.
Starvation and death scourge
the lands while the
western world ties to get a tan.

Racism sucks the life
out us as men die in
other lands. "Don't change my lifestyle,"
we cry. We wouldn't want to
ever sacrifce time, money or thouht so
instead we choose to rot--
while the world slowly goes insane.

But we listen to the drummer play
as we slowly sink away.
Entertained to death
we quietly atrophy in our
living room lounge chairs as
the remote control slips out
of our hand.

Who do we believe in this
confusing time?
Most would decline,
but I choose to follow Jesus Christ.

Yes, this is pretty great...and pretty much how things are right now....and maybe it's good you haven't a class in poetry writing James....isn't YOUR way the right way, anyway? Neat, your wife supports you....

It was written during the 1st Gulf war. That was a fun time for me, not the war, but all that surrounded it. I went to downtown San Jose with some of my roomates and there were people demonstrating for and against the war....seemed sort of like the 60's to me. I was for the war but I was enjoying walking around on both sides of the demonstrations, not really publically aligning myself with either side. Me and a couple friends walk around downtown with some protestors just because it was kind of fun! I was 22 or 23 and it was something I always wanted to do, be around the 60's type of environment without all the drugs.

Thanks Joan for the encouragement on the poems. I am not sure what you mean when you say "isn't YOUR way the right way, anyway?" But I do know that I like my style of writing and want to evolve as a writer. I may take a class in poetry someday, but I will have to let my wife get through her Spanish Masters progam first. I guess I learn by doing a lot more than by just reading about something.....I hope to write some kind of book someday. Whether that is a book of poems or some type of novel I am not sure. I guess the important thing is to continue to write. I am also interested in writing a children's book as well.

Well, I better get back to work.....

Neat story...All I meant by isn't your way the right way was...that sometimes when taking a class you get brainwashed by a teacher into thinking that THEIR way is the only way to do something....or that they may try to inhibit your own style in favor of their style....so I was just thinking that a poetry teacher would try to do that do you....in other words, James, you already know how to write poetry, why take a class??

No problem, how about taking a class in something you don't know how to do but have always wanted to learn...whatever that is......
