Adult daughter with ADHD can't keep a job

Our daughter is just over 20 and has recently been diagnosed with ADHD. Her twin brother has the same but from a diagnosis many years ago. F, our daughter, is bright but has issues with low self esteem and confidence. She did OK at A levels but Uni foundation year went really badly. She did not make any friends and sort of dropped out. After a years gap she has a place at a good Uni doing an art and fashion course but does not want to go.

Previously F had a job at a supermarket but left because she did not like it and thought people were looking at her.

All of the ADHD drugs have been tried but she can't take them because of increased heart rate or they didn't help. Counselling doesn't change anything and she is stuck in the situation where she says 'nothing has ever been worth doing.'

I want to help but don't know what to do. Any suggestions please.

Re: Adult daughter with ADHD can't keep a job

Hi, Penn
Welcome to the forum!

Has she been assessed for depression? It is a very common co-morbid condition with ADHD and especially with untreated ADHD. Her “symptoms” sound more like depression than ADHD but I’m no doctor.

Re: Adult daughter with ADHD can't keep a job

There is a whole process a person goes though when they are diagnosed as an
adult. Very similar to the stages of grief. She may need some time to come to
terms with the fact that she isn't who everyone thought she was ... who she
thought she was herself.

I don't think you have as many options in the medication department as we do
here in the states. Do you have Strattera or Wellbutrin? Those can treat any
depression along with the adhd symptoms. Another option is Omega 3 fish oil
supplements (I've found them very helpful). Meditation may also be helpful.
And she may not have found the right counselor for her personality.
