Intention and positive thinking

One issue that has come up in the recent threads on the hunter farmer model is the great confusion about "Positive Thinking".

The issue is that the idea is caricatured into the simplistic concept that one can just "wish one's problems away".

That of course, is absurd, but it would be a mistake to think that this is what is meant by positive thinking.

To employ positive thinking properly it is necessary to hold an appropriate intention, and to be vivid enough in the detail of the intention to allow one to construct a path to get there.

In the context of ADHD, I think that making one single assumption is enough to establish a field in which positive thinking can work.

The idea is just this:
That like any other property of the mind, attention, and self regulation are trainable quantities, and that any action repeated frequently enough, with enough arousal and enough directed attention, will ultimately produce a training effect through the mechanism of neuroplasticity.

The catches are
1) If we don't believe it is possible, we won't try it.

2) For most of us with uncontrolled ADHD- whenever we try to attend to one thing we either get overaroused, or suffer from intrusive thoughts.
Neither of these problems are insurmountable though, if we can find someone with the right skills to help us.

So positive thinking is not just an infantile wishful thinking, it is an art, and a skill, that is trainable in itself.

Re: Intention and positive thinking

Isn't there already a positive thinking thread that's like less than a week old?
