Genetic Testing and Antidepressant Prescribing

"Can genetic testing help doctors better prescribe antidepressants? There’s quite a debate."
from Ilana Marcus at the Washington Post, 31 March 2019.

As the title suggests, there are mixed opinions and conflicting evidence about whether testing for genetic variations (in metabolism or other pathways related to drug response) can help people find medications that are likely to help them and not cause bad side effects.

If you've had this kind of testing either before, or in the course of trying antidepressants, what has been your experience?

Re: Genetic Testing and Antidepressant Prescribing

I have had the testing and, thankfully, I did not have to pay the full price. It narrowed my choices down to one medication, Pristiq, that would not have overwhelming side effects. The medication has worked okay, but the harsh side effects I felt with others have not been present. I still have some side effects, however. I feel much more lethargic, and at the end of the day I have no desire to do much of anything. In the last week I decided to experiment with not taking it, and there have been a few side effects from the withdrawal.
