ADHD and how I can't remember to check back if anyone has joined chat!

The whole live chat thing is going to take some patience to cultivate. This Java based application is pretty well crippled in comparison to internet relay chat (IRC) or things like it.

I realise that it must be about a thousand times more easy to manage for the people that have to pick up the pieces when things go wrong too so I understand the appeal for the administrators.

I don't get on very often and there is no way for me to be flagged if someone logs in and I'm busy doing something else. This makes it difficult for me to even notice someone has joined me unless I happen to go back and check.

There are sound files available to toot some kind of horn deliberately and I'll try and practise using that to help people hear me comming and flee for their lives!

*beep*
*bird*
*bleep*
*choochoo*
*evil*
*harp*
*meow*
*slap*
*welcome*
*whip*

These are all ways that can alert people that someone has joined us if we are logged into the chat but off doing something else because we are the only ones there! Or of course in my case if everyone has left.. I'll have a shower shortly. Promise Futs I promise.

Anywho if anyone has other ideas please let us all know. I don't spend much time there just because it's more awkward than what I'm used to. I believe it's a great tool though and has proved very helpful twice in the past ten days or so when I really needed to bend someones ear up and lucky for me I found help in the chat of the hightest order.

You know who you are and thanks.

Above is the link where I got the information on the sound files and how to post them to the chat room. There is a lot of other information there too. It can be accessed on the login screen when you are about to join chat. It's marked "HELP" strangly enough. I'll catch you all there eventually.

Yup, what Ian said...

You can get the help pages anytime by the right click menu in the main window.

There are a lot of commands that aren't in the menus; maybe we could get them added, if the software is flexible enough?

One command I like is the "/beepall" without the quotes. This enables a beep to go off when someone posts. If I'm in the chat room alone and am off doing something else while I wait for company a beep alerts me to the post in chat and I can at least hear that someone is active. I'm loving that feature but I don't think this software is a very smooth thing for my browser to handle. I see now that the sound seems to be broken. It was working for a while there.. bah.. I am always struggling with Java in one way or another.

The most helpful method I think is to send a private chat message to the sleeper which opens up a new window that is visually noticable. Right click on the person's name in the right column list of names.

OK I was in the chat room the other day. I didn't recall seeing many options there. How does one find all the different commands to use?

It would be nice if these suggestions could be posted in the chat window --kinda like the "sticky notes" at the beginning of each forum.

Also, it would be nice if there was a way to see how many people were in the chat area without having to enter --like how it shows how many "current active users" are online at the Forums, if it specifically say how many are in the chat room.

gingagirl try the "quick links" drop down menu at the top of each forum page and select "who's chatting" to see who is there without joining.

Ginga, I agree it'd be useful to have some tips about contacting sleepers and stuff.

Ian, cool, I hadn't seen that bottom quick-link!
