4 days per week with a psychiatrist at age 10

When I was just starting middle school, a family friend recommended a psychiatrist to my parents because I was overly-emotional, angry and had terribly low self esteem.

This psychiatrist made me go 4 times per week after school and he would get mad at my Mom for trying to cancel an appointment, even for a good reason.

Anyway, I feel like it destroyed any chance of me having a social life by preventing me from doing things after school and I was so embarrassed about seeing a psychiatrist that I would hardly talk to anyone because they might think that I was a mental case. It also made me mad that I had to walk there after school, wait 45 or so minutes in the waiting room and then go through the hour-long appointment. Once in a while I would even ride the bus home and lie that I had forgotten about the appointment to get out of going.

Besides that, all this guy did was ask me questions. Why did I do this? What made me feel that way? I never knew why or what so I couldn't answer any of his questions and it felt like a huge waste of time.

About 5 years later, I was diagnosed with ADD and started seeing a counselor once i a while. He was much more helpful and I actually enjoyed talking to him because I didn't feel like part of some big science experiment.

Has anyone else had an experience like this, and is 4 days per week reasonable for a 10-year-old in any case?

Re: 4 days per week with a psychiatrist at age 10

I know that for adults or children hospitalized for emotional or behavioral reasons that daily therapy is the norm, but it's hard to be able to say if seeing him four days a week was reasonable without getting a better idea of the difficulties you were going through at the time. There are mental health professionals that participate on these boards and maybe they can weigh in here and give some insight. I am glad you found a counselor that you connected with better...

Re: 4 days per week with a psychiatrist at age 10

I've been with CAMHS {a children's clinic for mental health issues basically) and seeing specialists there since I was about 8/9, and if problems are that intense and difficult, 4 times seems reasonable, though for long-term, I would think it'd be decreased, depending on progress though.

I'm glad you get on well with your new counselor and getting a diagnosis, it's always good to actually KNOW what is wrong with you and why you are the way you are. Big relief.
