Exam in 2 weeks Last chance

So last semester I was on my way to being dismissed from school. I had just been diagnosis with ADD, placed on meds and I provided them with a note from my doctor. I've been given a another chance to stay in and complete this semester and I have to retake the exam from last semester and pass it aswell.

My exam is in 2 weeks. I have 3 other major assignments that I need to complete and get at least a high B on to pass.

No pressure right? Its alot! I'm totally stressed right now! I have 2 weeks to study for this exam. Not to mention I have test taking anxiety.

Even though I am on meds I still get easily distracted.

How do you minimize distractions or any advice.

Re: Exam in 2 weeks Last chance

Hi, SassyPineapples. I use a few techniques while working at home. First, I hide everything on my computer screen unless it's relevant to my schoolwork. If you need a browser open, limit yourself to one window, and minimize it until needed. There's also software to temporarily block your access to sites you know will distract you. Most importantly for me is using the Pomodoro method. Using a timer, I work for a solid 25 minutes, and then rest for 5 minutes. That's one pomodoro unit. At the end of the fourth pomodoro, I take a 20 minute break. It's great structure to keep working, plus it provides you with some time to get the distractibility out of of your system. I'm doing it right now, and my break is just about up. Also, if there's something that occurs to you while working that you feel you must attend to before you forget it, write it down and do it later. That way it'll be there to remind you, but you can keep working.

The bottom line is that it's not easy, even on effective medication. It's a cognitive behavioral issue that requires training, practice, and consistency. If I can do it, though, I bet most other folks could.

Hope that helps. Oh, yeah, there are Pomodoro apps. for computer and smartphone available.

Re: Exam in 2 weeks Last chance

PS I forgot one thing that's kind of important: You can adjust the blocks of time to suit your needs. I started out at 15 minutes of work/5 minutes of rest, with a 15 minute break after four. Whatever works for you. You don't want to push yourself too hard and sabotage the process.

Re: Exam in 2 weeks Last chance

Hi there, thanks for your post. This is a REALLY important issue for all of us in education.

At age 51, I have this year (March), commenced a bachelors degree in - you guessed it - psychology. It will take nearly ten years for me to get fully registered and specialized (in Australia). Phark! But I'll only be ten years older in ten years anyway, so ... why not?

I feel your pain, and I do NOT want to be in the situation you're in - I'm keeping up, but that's stressful enough, let alone falling behind. Here are my thoughts, based on experience,in and out of uni:

I absolutely endorse a formal measured time plan, as noted in the fantastic post below. I didn't know it was now a method, with a name, but there you go!! I set a timer on my phone for 20 mins, then 10 mins for chores or whatever. The big challenge is to remember to get back to my study desk, and to keep resetting the timer. And to BLOODY WELL STICK TO THE ALARMS!! Laughing!

I have also registered with disability support services at uni. (Not that, you know, ADD is an illness in my view, but bureaucracy has it under DISS services.). They have fantastic info, encouragement etc. They repeatedly suggest the basics, including WRITING A STUDY LIST of what you need to do TODAY, when you first get up in the morning. Break your study tasks down into small, progressive chunks. This will keep you focused on the immediate tasks.

I could give you more on this but given your short time frame, I'll just propose TIMING YOURSELF, and CHUNKING DOWN your objectives.

And EAT. Feed your brain PROTEIN and CARBS all day long, all night. Drip feed the nutrition. Roasted almonds, electrolyte drinks, even a fizzy drink to keep your blood sugars up.

Bbbrrrringggg. That's my timer. Back to the bio books ...
Cheers

Re: Exam in 2 weeks Last chance

It depends on what your distractions are. If it's the internet, there are website blocksing software programs out there which work like a charm!!! Stayfocusd is amazing if you use only chrome otherwise I'd recommend focalfilter which blocks websites across all browsers!!

Also make sure that you schedule regular breaks.

Good luck and fingers crossed!!!

Re: Exam in 2 weeks Last chance

I would second Execfun's recommendations. I do something similar. Now regarding the stress... If it is regular stress, then you can manage it. Just tell yourself you'll do your best and work as hard as you can. Besides, that is really all you can do in any situation. The rest will be out of your control. Just work hard and let the chips fall where they may fall. If you succeed then great. If you don't succeed then you know you tried your hardest. At that point you reflect and learn from what you might have done wrong. Now, if you have stress problems that require you to see a therapist, then go see a therapist and get control of that stress.

Hey! I hope your day went better, from the sounds of it it might be highly useful for you to take about 30 minutes out of the day and make sure to get some exercise! I'm right in the thick of finals week and know that I cannot get anything done unless I exercise that day and burn off as much hyperactive steam as possible

Would it help to clear your mind here, with us? Being accountable to other people, like a study group, usually helps me to stop spiralling.

How about writing down in a reply post, in bullet points, what your study objectives are for the NEXT 24 HOURS only, and which tasks you can delegate.

This is how I might go about it:

SUBJECT: BIOL1040
- STUDY TASK: Lec 1/2/3 review
- sub task - write up lecture notes
- sub task - make up xls flashcards - ** google @flash card assistant for microsoft excel@
- sub task - 20 minute flashcard session

MY REWARD WHEN ACCOMPLISHED: walk to the shop, buy a gelato!

SUBJECT: PSYC1010
- STUDY TASK: [e.g. Lec 6 / 7 review]
- sub task - write up lecture notes
- sub task - make up xls flashcards
- sub task - 20 minute flashcard session

MY REWARD WHEN ACCOMPLISHED: walk to the shop, buy chocolate!

CHORES / TASKS /JOBS TO DELEGATE
- JOB 1: xxxxxxxxxxx
- delegate to: xxxxxxxxx

- JOB 2: xxxxxxxxxxx
- delegate to: xxxxxxxxx

- JOB 3: xxxxxxxxxxx
- delegate to: xxxxxxxxx

- JOB 4: xxxxxxxxxxx
- delegate to: xxxxxxxxx

You get the idea!

Yea, this is the type of thing that I was talking about. This type of thing works for me when I procrastinate. I would post my plan early morning and then post the accomplished things at night.

You GO, GIRL!! Well done. When you wake up, do it again! Post your list for the day.

Just watch the realism of the timing, sub tasks should be small chunks of reasonably small jobs. Sub tasks should be able to be completed in an hour or so study session.
Well done
