Question is on a distinguished road
If anyone needs an ADHD diagnosis in Singapore, dont go to a government hospital

I waited 2 months for this appointment. The appointment started off well enough, the psychatrist seemed nice, but the moment she realised I was there about ADHD and had been diagnosed overseas, she started talking about how she had seen many patients with similar cases like me and they all ended up going to a private practice instead, and that there are a lot of regulations they have to follow to do a ADHD diagnosis, and that a private practice might be easier.

Oh and she mentioned that she did not deal with ADHD. After making statements like that, she just stopped, looked at me, and didnt seem to have any interest in bringing up what she could do to help me.

I didnt understand why she was saying all that at first, but it became clear very quickly that she had no interest in diagnosing me because she kept making vauge, unclear statements and got annoyed when asked to elaborate on them. She refused to do any tests because she claimed that i had taken my meds that day and the test would not be accurate (she didnt even bother to ask me if i had taken my meds that day...).

The most that she was willing to do was refer me to a psychologist to do the test (only after I brought up the issue of getting a diagnosis), but kept evading the question when I asked why I was getting referred to a psychologist instead of coming back here another day to do the test. When I asked whether I was supposed to come back here after the test, she got more annoyed and kept being evasive, claiming that she didn't know and it would depend on what instructions the psychologist gave me.

At no point whatsoever did she say anything like "Okay, heres what we can do...", she was very reluctant to suggest anything and just kept telling me how difficult things were, how long things would take, etc, then stopping and looking at me.

Oh and it would take 2-3 weeks for the psychologist to call me to give me an appointment, and god knows how long for the actual appointment date. In other words, the appointment was just to get me out of her hair and push me to go to a private practice instead.

When I told her my medication was running out, she didn't seem to care and made ridiculous suggestions like "I'm sure you can get more on your own" and suggested I fly back to Australia to get more.

I tried showing her copies of the medical notes that my psychatrist in Australia had given me, she only glanced at it for a second then handed it back to me without reading.

She also kept insisting she needed "evidence" from my psychatrist in Australia that I had been diagnosed with ADHD, but got annoyed when I asked her to clarify what kind of evidence exactly. The most she was willing to say was "test results" and "evidence, your doctor should know". I tried to show her the medical notes that my psychatrist had given me again, but she kept insisting it was a letter (it was not, they were the doctor's notes retrieved from the computer system), that it would not qualify as evidence, and showed me a printed form that had a bar code on it and implied that medical records had to have a bar code or it did not count.

At the end of 30 mins, she shooed me out of the door and did not seem to expect me to come back. Little wonder that all her ADHD patients switched to private practices to get a diagnosis.

So in short, dont bother going to a government hospital to get a ADHD diagnosis, because at least some of the doctors there do not want the hassle involved, just go to a private practice where the doctors have a vested interest in you coming back.

The downside? Its 4-5 times more expensive to go to a private psychologist, at bare minimum, compared to a subsidised government hospital. But I dont have a choice if I want to get treatment.

That was subsidised? So you even had to pay for that incompetence!

Re: If anyone needs an ADHD diagnosis in Singapore, dont go to a government hospital

Yes, going through the public health system is a lot cheaper, at a government hospital subsidised fees to see a specialist is about $50 or below, but if it isnt subsidised, its $160+. Thats why I went through the public health system, we have a reputation for a good healthcare system so I didnt think it would end up like this.

Did a quick search on the psychatrist's name and it seems she is very famous, wrote a lot of books, held seminars, etc. So it isnt some random nobody who just got her qualifications. I guess she forgot the point of being a doctor is to help people, or maybe she never got it in the first place.
