Question New member intro

Hi, I have a mid-teen who has attention and focus issues when addressing non-preferred activities. Not hyperactive, stubborn. Like many, we hesitated to use an Rx solution for the issue. He seemed to be getting along in school all right in elementary school. We decided to try Metadate in 8th grade to see if it helped, neutral or had side effects. It seemed to help with school work completion/grades. In the first half of 9th grade our child stopped taking the medication (30mg daily dose, ER), bec/ he became convinced that it was negatively affecting his friendships. He noted having difficulty being able to start conversations with friends, thinking of things to say (continuing/carrying on a conversation), being witty/funny. He now refuses to take the medication.

I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced their child reporting this 'symptom'/side effect or if the result my child experienced might possibly be a result of early teen-age/high school awkwardness and drawing conclusions too definitively from the superficial evidence in the shifting social sands of early high school. I'm wondering if it's worth trying any other versions of this medication.

Re: New member intro

Welcome!

Not saying your son isn't stubborn because I don't know him and you do, but
adhd does impair our ability to stay focused on tasks we find less interesting.

ADHD delays development in some areas, including social skills, so it could be
your son is having difficulty because of several things: adhd, puberty, and the
meds. It might be worth trying another med.

I know in some countries that's pretty much the only option available. If that's
the case where you live, there may be other options like Strattera or Welbutrin,
or even non-prescription options like Omega 3 fish oil supplements or CBD oil
(cannabidoil).

Re: New member intro

My son was medicated at the age of 4. Over the summer between freshman and sophomore year he took a break and resumed towards the end of that summer. He said that he didnt like the way the medicine made him feel so I didnt force him to take it. He is 23 now and hasnt taken meds since than and has made deans list and has been recommended for internships and other programs. He could still use the meds imo but doesnt want them. My middle daughter went off her meds in 7th grade. My youngest could never tolerate them. So kids are all different,
